Travel Lessons & New Beginnings

It’s September, and I’m BACK! I love to travel, but it feels fantastic to be back home.

This is a season of fundamental “back-ness” for me: Back to school, back to work, back to witchery, and back to the US.

In my last post, I talked about how difficult it is for me to let myself take a break. I have a rough time with vacations, with relaxing. But they are extremely necessary.

Because when you’re done with the vacation, you can return to the daily grind with a fresh perspective.

What did I learn while I was abroad? What did my travels teach me?

Lessons Learned

You don’t need to limit yourself to one career. Chances are, if you’re interested in many things, there is some thread that connects them. Before I left, I was struggling with my life as a multipotentialite. While I was abroad, I found that tarot and the occult practice helps me to stay grounded. Environmental advocacy and tarot are both about digging deep, learning what we need to protect, and getting creative.

Of course, I knew this before, but the time away from home really helped put this in perspective for me.

I realized that what I was working toward (namely: a 40+ hour per week position, and tarot on the side) wasn’t sustainable. I realized that if I truly wanted to have two careers, that what those looked like would need to be essentially different. So: I’ve shifted my frame!

My ideal has become a 25-30 hour per week position in environmental advocacy. From there, I will have time to dedicate to the tarot business, editing my novel, and other hobbies.

This means that having two careers – one in the environmental sector, another doing tarot readings – is actually possible. It means that I’ll have time to write that novel, or to hike, to finally take up Nordic skiing.

And speaking of new goals …

It’s time for new beginnings!

I am very happy to announce that I’ve accepted my dream job (at half-time hours) and will be relocating at some point this winter!

I’ll be moving to the shores of Lake Superior, my spiritual mother, my rock. I know it will be a rough transition, I know that it will be a while before the north woods feels like home for me, but it’s been calling to me.

So I answered. The universe chimed in too.

A lot of very hard work went into this – I don’t want to just talk about “my dream life” without recognizing the dedication, sweat, and network that got me here. I’ve been trying to make a career for myself – and trying to move to this particular place – for 10 years. I’ve learned some hard lessons about professionalism, and about what I do and don’t want.

And those dreams? It’s never as easy to actually live it as it is to dream it. I will definitely make some sacrifices – like leaving my friends and family. It might feel very lonely in the first year or so.

But, even with all the uncertainty, I am so excited to roll up my sleeves and get down to work!

I’m not sure what this means for Northern Lights Witch yet. All I know is that I will still be here – and I will still be doing tarot readings for you. It means a shift in my personal life as I finish up my last full semester of grad school and begin the transition North, and so of course this project will remain a bit fluid.

But that’s the nature of a spiritual blog, right? I’ll be here. I’ll read your cards. Let’s share the journey.
